The Hallo Project is something that I have been extremely excited about since I heard about it. The brief is so open, I feel like now is the time I can really show who I am as an individual through Film. The Hallo Project is going to allow me to experiment with my ideas, try new shots, and really show and appreciate what I have learnt in the past weeks.

Project Proposal:

Name: Katie McCamley

Pathway: Extended diploma Film and TV Level 3

Project Title: ‘The Hallo Project’

Rational:

Over the past seven weeks, it has been eye-opening and informative to learn and discover the many elements of creating a Film. Throughout this project I hope to showcase the techniques and elements I have learned. For example different shot types and the semiology of a scene. My ‘Hallo Project’ is a ‘Family Drama’ and something very personal to me that I think about a lot. The story focuses on a girl who goes to Disney every year with her family, most importantly her Nana. Now her Nan has passed away, it is her job to book the tickets for this years trip, but this year it means going without her Nan. I want to show the characters raw emotion, and focus on the complicated feeling of nostalgia that will clearly be present in the Film. I think the feeing of grief and nostalgia will help the audience to relate to the character, as well as feeling a strong emotional connection with the situation themselves.

Project Concept:

I will be using Video as my media format, as I want to be able to focus on the visual elements of how grief and nostalgia physically effect someone’s outward appearance, and well as inward. I also want to convey this through editing my video. The main influence surrounding my project is my Nan. She was and will forever remain one of the most incredible, intelligent and inspirational women I have ever had the pleasure of being close to. Grief and nostalgia are such hard topics to touch on, and I hope to be able to put all of my sadness and raw emotion into creating this to show an accurate representation of the effects my Nan had on my life. My target audience is very large, branching from young to old, and all genders, as grief and nostalgia effects everyone, and Disney is something most people have grown up with. My role in the project will be Acting, Directing and camera, sound and lighting design. I also came up with the original idea, and will be doing all of the relevant research surrounding the project. The technical equipment I will be using is my camera (Canon EOS 700D), a tripod to keep my camera steady and a white reflector to help to improve lighting.

Evaluation:

I plan to evaluate in a variety of different ways to get the most out of this project possible. I will evaluate my own working by watching back footage, and thinking about what I could do to improve my working process when I create more films in the future. I will also make sure I get the opinions and views of my target audience, by getting peer reviews, and getting them to explain their opinion on my short film. Often this can be extremely helpful, as a new set of eyes can reveal many things.

Communication Report:

My communication method is going to be video. I personally feel as if using video as my communication method will allow me convey a stronger and clearer message to my target audience. It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words, and so this means that a video must be worth millions. Using video means that I feel like I can truly express my personality throughout the video, whilst conveying a huge amount of emotion and meaning throughout the project.

I would like to include a voice over throughout my production. I also do believe that audio is an extremely important part of communication, as it can create tension and other emotions such as anger and nostalgia. Video will be my main form of communication, but audio will play an important role in evoking the audiences strong emotional connection to my piece.

I feel as if video is the most effective form of communication, as it gives the audience a visual representation of what is in your head, allowing you to explain what you are thinking in the form of a moving image. This will hopefully help to show the audience exactly what I want them to imagine. I want my short film to be relatable and nostalgic, and hopefully using video will help to convey these emotions strongly.

Other methods of communication include radio and print. Radio is an extremely important and effective way of communication. It allows you to get information across quickly and effectively, as well as to a large range of people, young to old. Radio also allows you to convey information without forcing the audience to imagine something specific. Radio allows you to imagine something that is not put in your head, and so every individual will be able to have their complete own story. It is almost like reading a book. No two people would think of the exact same people, the exact same story. I have decided not to use radio though, this is because I love conveying my thoughts and feelings through a visual medium, as I feel as if I can show and allow myself to open up to true creativity and expression.

Another method of communication that I have chosen to reject is print. Print is probably, in my personal opinion, my least favourite form of communication when it comes to creativity and self expression. I don’t feel like I would be giving my idea justice to write it in words. I don’t think I would be able to show my true nostalgia and emotion to the subject I am focusing on. My Nan is an extremely important part of this project, and she was ands is still one of the most inspirational women in my whole life. It is important to me that I show through this project how much Disney was important to our relationship. I remember sitting every evening with her and watching a Disney movie. I remember going to Disney with her each year, and going everywhere that she went. This is why I think Video is the most effective form of communication to use when portraying these emotions.

Storyboard:

When it comes to research, the very first thing I had to do was come up with an idea. Once I had figured out the basics of my idea I began to think about shot types and where I wanted to film my project. I created a story board to show the shots I want to capture throughout the project. I was hoping to create an emotional response from the audience, and so the shots I decided to take would be really important in determining whether or not this response would be as strong.

Overall, I am really happy that I completely my story board in so much detail. It was really useful to look at whilst filming my short film, as I was clearly able to see and understand the shots that I needed to create my short film.

Here are pictures of the storyboard that I created:

Research Plan:

Primary research:

  • Going to my location beforehand
  • seeing that my costumes are of the best quality possible before production starts
  • seeing my props and making sure they are of the highest quality possible
  • making sure I talk to my crew before production about shot types and confirm their job roles.
  • making collage: finding pictures of character and nan. buying collage.

Secondary research:

  • finding possible locations online
  • finding possible props online

Research:

Locations:

The location I am using is my bedroom. I have decided to use my room as the character and nan in the production is me and my Nan. I wanted to keep the production as accurate and as close to me a possible to try to help the audience feel and somewhat understand the intense emotion that the character is feeling in her situation.

I will make sure that before filming i will make sure the things in shot are all organised by me. I want my props to show that Disney is the girls passion, and makes up such an important part of her, and her families life.

Props:

I will be using a variety of different props in my production to create the atmosphere of a nostalgic individual who often feels trapped in the past, unable to look to the future:

Winnie The Pooh Teddy:

img_4640

The prop that is probably the most noticeable in the short film is the large winnie to pooh teddy behind the actor on the bed. I wanted this to be really noticeable in the scene as it is something I got as a child from my Nan. Winnie the pooh is a character who tries his best to accumplish what he can with the help of his friends by his side. This is what my character is trying to do when plucking up the courage to book the tickets without her Nan. The teddy being really large and bold in the scene also is being used to represent that Disney is such a big art of her life, and so this moment is a big part of her life.

Disney CDS:

img_4642

The next props that I want to include in my scene were these Disney CD’s. I wanted to show that the characters obsession with disney goes further than just teddies. It goes into music and the personality of the character. These D’s are also classics, which suggest that the character has been watching disney from a young age, and has seen classic films as well as the newer films. Details like this I hope will all add to how my audience decodes the character

Piglet Teddy:

img_4641

The other teddy that I hope to show in the scene is the piglet teddy. I don’t want to add too many Disney teddies to the scene, as I feel as though it will make the scene look too set up. I like the idea of having both Winnie the Pooh and Piglet though, as it shows that she has watched many of the shows so much she knows more than just the main character.

Laptop:

The laptop that the character will look up the Disney 2017 tickets on is a Macbook Pro. This laptop is easy to carry around so it won’t be hard to use when trying to set up the scene. The only problem is the battery life does not last a significant amount of time, so we will have to keep a laptop charger on set to make sure that the filming process won’t be disrupted by this.

Iphone:

I will be using my own iPhone 6 in the scene. I also have a Stitch background which will add the the overall semiology of the scene which is an added bonus. iPhones do run out of charge reasonably quickly though, and so I would like to keep a charger on set to make sure the filming process runs smoothly.

Scrapbook and photos:

img_4647

The scrapbook and photographs are one of the most memorable props throughout the short film. I have used photos that represent the happy and wonderful memories I had in Disneyland and Disneyworld with my Nan. I hope that these photos will help the audience to understand the grief that the character is feeling.

Eeore earring holder:

The smaller props can make just as much impact as the biggest ones. To really make my set look exactly how I wanted it to, I decided to add an eeyore earring case to my side table. Smaller details will really be the thing that helps to show my audience that disney as what takes up the most time and gives her so much happiness in her life.

Autograph book:

fullsizerender

I will also put my autograph book from Disney into the scene to back up and show that the character and her family go to Disneyland each year, like is suggested by the messages and memories scrapbook.

Success heart:

img_4646

The final prop that I have decided to put in my scene is this ‘Success’ heart. This heart represents that all the character stoves to do is keep going. To keep going no matter the hard times she has gone through. All these props I hope will help the audience t decode the character asa brave individual who has been through a lot and does, sometimes, live in the past.

Costumes:

The costume I am wearing as an Actor is a grey jumper dress and leggings. The character is supposed to look reasonably played back, as she is at home in her own room. This is why I decided to go for such a claim look. I also didn’t want to costume to distract from the overall effect of the production. The character is supposed to be the plainest thing compared to the many props behind her to signify that she, in a way, depends on all of the things and people around her to be happy.

Actors:

I have decided be the actor for my production. I decided this firstly because I am the person the idea is based around, and so I am the young girl in the photos with her Nan. Also, because I want the audience to have such a close connection to the character, I want to really be able to how exactly how I feel through the role. This is in hopes to give my short film an even more nostalgic and emotional feel.

Evaluation of my research:

Overall, now that I have filmed my short film, I am so happy that I carried out all of the research I did. I feel as though all of the props added to my film, and the costume didn’t overpower the film. Doing the research has definitely made the filming process a lot smoother. One example of this is when the laptop ran out of charge. Because I had thought about this prior to filming I already had a charger ready, and so we were back to filming a few moments after.

Production Diary:

Tuesday:

On Tuesday it was my day to get the shots for my short Film. Zoe and Rhiana helped me to film the production, as well as helping me to make sure I kept continuity through my shots.

10.00am. I have just met Zoe and Rhiana at Ashford train staton. We decided to meet 30 minutes earlier than planned so we could have a longer discussion about the shots I need to capture today. We have taken the bus back to my house to begin Filming. On the bus ride home I spoke to them and showed them all of the shots I have decided to shoot today, and I have described to them exactly what I want each shot to look like. As I am also the Director of my production, I need to make sure that each shot is exactly how I want it to be.

11.00am We have now begun filming. We have done 3/18 shots so far. The lighting is really good at the moment and so we are trying to get as many shots done as we can before it begins to get dark

2.00pm We have all stopped to have a rest and so I could note down what has happened in the last few hours. I am really happy with the shots we have managed to get so far. I feel as though we are working really well as a team to make the most out of the time we have today possible. The only problem we have had is that the laptop I am using to look up how to book the tickets has run out of charge. I am using this time now to charge it before we go back to filming.

3.00pm The shots I have got so far are all exactly how I want them. We have just had a problem with one of the shots. In shot number 14 I was planning to do an establishing shot of the character and computer and then pan over to the collage. This was going to represent how the character was still having difficulty moving on and booking the tickets. It was supposed to show how the character is still, in some ways, living in the past. We have tried to do this shot 12 times and I am still not happy with how it is looking.

3.05pm after thinking about this in more depth, I have decided to screen shot 14, and instead try to get 2 shots. On shot will be me looking at the computer and then looking over at the collage which is out of shot. I will then get another shot of the collage and edit them. I think this will look smoother and more professional than the pan I was really not happy with.

3.17pm I am much happier doing 2 shots instead of the pan shot.

4.56pm we have finished filming for my short film. I have looked back through all of the footage and I have checked that I have all the shots I need.

Overall I am so happy with how  we worked as a team to capture the best shots possible. We worked well as a team and finished whilst the lighting was still bright enough to film nicely lit shots.

Monday and Wednesday:

Monday:

On Monday we were filming Rhianas short film. I was an actor this day, so I hat to make sure I was on set on time so I could make sure my hair makeup and costume was how she wanted it. I was playing a stalker that the other character was imagining, so there were al to of close up shots and angles that we had to capture.

Wednesday:

On Wednesday we were filming Zoes’ short film. I was also acting in this short film. I was playing a girl who is at home, when all of a sudden strange things begin to happen/ I also helped to set up the scene to make sure it was how she wanted it, and helped to flick lights on and off the create a creepy atmosphere when I wasn’t in the shot acting.

Critical Perspective report:

Genre:

overall I have decided that the Genre of my short film would be ‘Family Drama.’ My short film, as I said previously, focuses on a girl who is used to going on holiday with her family to Disney every single year. Each year she books the same amount of tickets but, sadly, this year she is going to have to book one less ticket. This is because her Nana has passed away. I am focusing of the feeling of Nostalgia and grief, and I hope that the audience will have a close emotional connection with character. I thin that the large scrapbook shows how much she has been through there with her family, and how much having to book one less ticket is effecting her. Also, when she messages in the group chat about finding it hard to book one less ticket, she is met with the support of ‘you can do it xxx’ suggesting that her family is strong, and promote sticking together to stay strong.

Semiology:

When editing my short film, i would like to add more saturation and contrast to my images. I have decided to do this because it saturation is contrasting to how the character is feeling at the beginning of the short film. As well as the elements or nostalgia and grief that I want to show through my production, I also think that it is important to show the progression in the emotions of my character through the production. By the end of the film, although we see her looking back at the scrapbook, you can see the change in her emotions when we zoom in on her eyes for the second time. She seems more confident, stronger, like she has found the strength and courage within her to carry on. This is why I want to saturate my clips slightly more, to show the audience that there is hope, even though she is going through something incredibly hard.

Mise-en-scene:

location:

my location is really important when it comes to  my production. Like I said previously: the location I am using is my bedroom. I have decided to use my room as the character and nan in the production is me and my Nan. I wanted to keep the production as accurate and as close to me a possible to try to help the audience feel and somewhat understand the intense emotion that the character is feeling in her situation.

Another reason is because I want to the audience to feel a sense of normality when watching the clip, as this will show the audience that this is what the character is used to, and how she feels all the time, not just in this small space of time.

Props:

Props are the main thing that creates miss-en-scene in my short film. It is one of the things that I thought most about through the production. I already have spoken about this when doing a research, but here is a reminder:

The prop that is probably the most noticeable in the short film is the large winnie to pooh teddy behind the actor on the bed. I wanted this to be really noticeable in the scene as it is something I got as a child from my Nan. Winnie the pooh is a character who tries his best to accumplish what he can with the help of his friends by his side. This is what my character is trying to do when plucking up the courage to book the tickets without her Nan. The teddy being really large and bold in the scene also is being used to represent that Disney is such a big art of her life, and so this moment is a big part of her life.

The next props that I want to include in my scene were these Disney CD’s. I wanted to show that the characters obsession with disney goes further than just teddies. It goes into music and the personality of the character. These CD’s are also classics, which suggest that the character has been watching disney from a young age, and has seen classic films as well as the newer films. Details like this I hope will all add to how my audience decodes the character

The scrapbook and photographs are one of the most memorable props throughout the short film. I have used photos that represent the happy and wonderful memories I had in Disneyland and Disneyworld with my Nan. I hope that these photos will help the audience to understand the grief that the character is feeling.

The smaller props can make just as much impact as the biggest ones. To really make my set look exactly how I wanted it to, I decided to add an eeyore earring case to my side table. Smaller details will really be the thing that helps to show my audience that disney as what takes up the most time and gives her so much happiness in her life.

I will also put my autograph book from Disney into the scene to back up and show that the character and her family go to Disneyland each year, like is suggested by the messages and memories scrapbook.

The final prop that I have decided to put in my scene is this ‘Success’ heart. This heart represents that all the character stoves to do is keep going. To keep going no matter the hard times she has gone through. All these props I hope will help the audience to decode the character is a brave individual who has been through a lot and does, sometimes, live in the past.

Narrative:

my story has a linear narrative. It flows from begin, to middle to end (chronological order) It all has a single stranded narrative. This means that there is only one main story line throughout the short film. I also think that my production come under the ‘open narrative’ category. This is because we never find out if the character actually plucks up the courage to book the tickets, or if they ever do end up going to Disney. It isn’t a cliff hanger, but there is still an open ending for the audience to pick what they think is going to happen.

Contextuality Report:

I feel like  used the resources that I had really well to create the best possible outcome for me as a creator. Throughout this project, I have put a lot of effort into trying to ensure that time, money, and other elements that can constrict the final outcome of my project do not effect my project. I think I have managed to achieve this really well. I was able to use my own camera, and I was able to use a tripod that was provided for me to use at the college. Because I am using my own room as a location I didn’t require any money to get to the location. I also didn’t have to rent anything or even buy and props or costumes because of the fact that the character is based around myself.

The only thing that my group did find throughout the week is that it was hard to get to different locations and that get back home again. One example of this is, when filming my project, Zoe got the bus down from Canterbury. Once we had finished filming for the day it was clear that she would not be able to make the last bus home. We then had to plan another route home for her, which required a train ride and a walk. This meant more money had to be spent on transport. Also, when filming for Rhianas project the buses were extremely infrequent. This meant that we had to start filming a little later that expected, which gave us less time to film before it got too dark.

Other things that could have been a problem are things such as lack or time and lack of money. Overall I think that I worked really well with the resources I had, and I am really happy with how my project turned out.

Final Evaluation

Overall I am really happy with how my short film turned out. Like I said before, I really wanted to show and try to represent the feelings of grief and nostalgia, and how much it can effect an individual. I think I have been able to capture this in some way throughout my project. I used lots of extreme close ups of my characters facial expressions to try to show the change in emotion throughout my short film from sad to confident and ready to book tickets.

In regards to the research I conducted, I am really happy with the amount of effort I put in to make sure that I had thought about all of the props I wanted to use throughout my production. I think that the rise-en-scene was really effective all the way through the production.

I am really happy that I decided to act in my own short film. I thin that this helped to show the audience that the character is really feeling the emotions I am trying to put across. At first I was worried about not controlling the camera when filming my short film, but I made sure to discuss in detail exactly how I wanted each shot before we began filming the shot, and so everything turned out exactly how I would have liked it. I also made sure to use the tripod whenever I could, so all of the shots I needed to be steady look so. Overall I am really pleased with all of the show that I got.

I was pleased that I decided to use a plain costume for my production. This meat that it didn’t distract from the message I was trying to put across. If I was to recreate this again in the future though, I would have liked to have worn my Nans’ necklace. This would have added another element of her into the short film and create and even more emotional tone to the short film. Saying this though, I feel as if my film is still focused on the character missing her nan, and worrying about booking one less ticket, an so this really isn’t a big issue.

One thing I am not sure comes across through the project is the fact that I am calling up to book the tickets specifically for Disney. If I was to recreate this project again in the future, I would also include some extreme closeups of the laptop to show the number I have to dial to call to book the tickets. I believe that this would make the ending even clearer to the audience, and ensure that they are not at all confused by the ending of the short film.

One thing that  I am extremely happy with is the foley sound and audio that I have created and used for this short film. For example, I reordered the audio for the clicking of the keyboard by clicking on the spacebar key of a stiff key on a college computer. This created a more intense sound that I think really works to show the clicking of the keyboard. I also think that the audio track I decided to used worked really well to create an atmosphere of childlike innocence and nostalgia. Small elements like this is what I think makes me so happy with my final project.

another thing that I am extremely happy with is the way that we worked as a team through Filming week. Working with my two friends really helped me to make my project as detailed and effective as possible, and I feel as if we worked well when filming all 3 productions. It is a really important skill to learn how to work well in a team when working in the Film or Media industry, as you often have to work as part of a bigger crew. This is another reason why I am glad that I worked with other people and helped them. Not only did it allow me to develop my own skills as an actor, cameraman and runner, it also helped me to develop other skills that are really important to have when working in the industry.
